There are many myths about the difficulty of obtaining a TN Visa for Canadians. If you have a tried-and-true method for creating a valid TN Visa Application, then you can quickly create your TN Visa Application and obtain your TN Visa upon entry into the U.S.
Step 1: Do you have a Job Offer?
One of the biggest hurdles Canadians face when looking for a job is getting a U.S. employer to hire them in spite of the TN Visa requirement. Most employers do not realize how inexpensive the TN Visa is and how quickly a Canadian can obtain the TN Visa and start working. The TN Visa Kit provides key interviewing techniques to address the employer's concerns so they are more likely to hire you based on your skills.
If you have a job offer from a U.S. employer, then you are ready to start creating your TN Visa Application.
Step 2: Do you Qualify for the TN Visa?
It is critical that you qualify for the TN Visa. What most people do not realize is that the job must also qualify under NAFTA. This is explained further in the TN Visa Kit.
The essential TN Visa requirements for Canadians are:
- You are a Canadian citizen.
- The job or business activity you will be performing is listed as part of the Official NAFTA Job List (Appendix 1603.D).
- You are qualified to work in this job or business activity.
- This is a job offered by a U.S. or Mexican employer (if you are planning to work in Mexico).
- You understand the TN Visa is temporary in nature and you can request a TN Visa for up to 3 years.
Step 3: Are You Applying by Mail or at the Border?
The TN Visa for Canadians now allow you to apply via mail or at a border crossing in person. If you apply by mail, it can take 2 to 3 months for processing and there is several hundred dollar application fee. At the border you will obtain the TN Visa immediately and the fee is $56 USD (includes I-94 processing fee).

Step 4: Create Your TN Visa Letter
The TN Visa is unlike most U.S. immigration visas. Whether you apply by mail or in person, you will need to complete a free form application letter or employer letter. You must write this TN Visa Application Letter, provide supporting documentation proving that you and the job meet the NAFTA requirements and then present them to an Immigration Officer at a Port of Entry.
It is important to know that the TN Visa Application Letter is not the same as a contractual offer letter most employers provide to you. If you go to the border with an offer letter, you will most likely be denied. The TN Visa Application Letter is also known as the TN Visa Employer Letter.
The TN Visa Kit provides you with step-by-step instructions to create your TN Visa Application Letter. You will also receive sample TN Visa Application Letters to help you create your TN Visa Application Letter.
Step 5: Prepare for the Border Interview
Most people are not prepared for the border interview. People assume if they have their TN Visa Application and present it at the border they will obtain their TN Visa. This is not the case. The Immigration Officer will review your Application and then conduct an informal interview by asking you questions to determine if you are telling the truth, if there are any inconsistencies in your story and if you and the job qualify for the TN Visa under NAFTA. The TN Visa Expert Kit will help you prepare for the border and present your case in the best possible light.
