Mexico TN Visa Interview: Appointment Process, Required Documents, and Common Questions

Mexican TN applicant with passport, DS-160 and employment documents talking to a consular officer at the interview window

Mexican professionals who seek a TN visa to allow them to live and work in the United States must schedule a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Mexico.

This “TN visa appointment Mexico” guide covers how the interview works. It’ll discuss how to schedule an appointment, which documents to prepare, and what questions applicants may be asked.

Why Mexican TN Applicants Need a Consular Interview

Canadians can apply for TN status by presenting their documentation to CBP officers when entering the country. But Mexicans must apply for a TN visa in the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Mexico, and this process includes scheduling and attending a visa interview.

How to Schedule a TN Visa Appointment in Mexico

Here’s how to schedule a TN visa appointment in Mexico:

Four steps to schedule a TN visa appointment in Mexico: DS-160, visa fee, biometric and consular appointments, interview prep

Complete Form DS-160

Go to the Consular Electronic Application Center and fill out the Form DS-160. This is an online non-immigrant visa application form, and completing it is the first step in applying for a U.S. non-immigrant visa.

Ensure that information about your employer, position, work location, and professional background is consistent with your supporting documents.

After completing the DS-160 online form, save and print the confirmation page. This page is proof that you submitted your online application, and you will need it for your biometric and visa interview appointment.

Pay the Visa Application Fee

Visit the U.S. visa appointment website for Mexico and create an account. The system creates an applicant profile for you. Log in and click “New Application.” Then, enter the requested information, such as your DS-160 confirmation number. The system will calculate your visa application fee and give you payment options. You may then make the payment.

Schedule the Required Appointments

After your visa fee payment is confirmed, the appointment calendar becomes available. Choose separate dates for biometric and consular appointments.

  • A biometric appointment is at an Applicant Service Center to capture your fingerprints and photograph.
  • A consular appointment is in the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in Mexico for an in-person visa interview with a U.S. officer.

When scheduling a visa interview, don’t assume that any Consulate always has shorter wait times or easier appointment availability. Availability can vary by location and time of year.

Prepare for the Interview Day

Before the interview day, review the instructions provided by your selected interview location. Ensure you follow all, including any security rules regarding permitted items inside the facility.

Prepare all supporting documents you’ll go with. On the interview day, arrive before the designated time on your appointment confirmation to allow extra time for security screening.

Documents Required for a Mexico TN Visa Interview

The exact document required for a Mexico TN visa interview depends on the applicant’s TN profession, education, licensing requirements, and individual circumstances. However, general supporting documents may include:

Document PurposeCommon Issues to Avoid
Valid passportIt confirms your identity and nationalityBringing an expired passport or one that does not have sufficient validity for the intended period of admission
DS-160 confirmation pageIt confirms that you submitted the online visa applicationEntering an incorrect DS-160 confirmation number when creating your visa appointment profile, or bringing a confirmation page from a different DS-160 submission to your visa interview
Appointment confirmation It confirms that you successfully scheduled biometric and consular interview appointments Going for the biometric or consular interview appointment without this proof
Visa fee payment evidenceIt confirms that you paid the required visa application fee through the approved payment system Assuming that payment has been completed when it has not been processed and activated in the appointment system.
TN employer support letterIt explains your US job offer to officers, as well as how you and the job qualify for the TN visaUsing a vague or generic TN support letter
Degree and academic transcriptThese show that you have the educational qualification required for the TN professionProviding credentials that do not match the TN profession requirements

Credential evaluation (if required)This helps establish that a foreign degree meets U.S. educational standardsAssuming that your foreign degree is enough, or obtaining an evaluation from an unrecognized provider
Additional case-specific evidenceThese help support other aspects of eligibility. For example, employment history and recommendation letters can support your professional experience.Providing unnecessary documents instead of those that directly support your eligibility for the TN profession

Employer and Position Documents

The TN employer support letter is one of the most important TN application documents. It shows you have a U.S.job offer and explains how you and the job qualify under the TN visa.

A strong TN employer support letter would include the following:

  • Offered position
  • Professional duties
  • Employment duration
  • Remuneration
  • Work location
  • TN category
  • TN eligibility justification

Note that the TN employer letter, DS-160, résumé, and interview answers should contain consistent information.

Degrees and Professional Credentials

To prove that you meet educational and professional requirements for the TN profession, you will need to provide evidence like:

  • A relevant degree
  • Academic transcripts
  • Professional licenses (for professions that require them)
  • Cédula Profesional (for professions requiring this)
  • Credential evaluation from a recognized provider (if this is required to prove that you are a qualified professional in Mexico)
  • Experience letters

Additional Supporting Evidence

TN applicants may need to provide additional evidence to address specific questions about their eligibility. These may include:

  • Employer-related documents: Further information about the U.S. company to help confirm their operation or the offered position
  • Qualification-related documents: Additional proof of professional experience or specialized skills, such as a professional portfolio and experience letters.
  • Temporary employment evidence: Documents that may help prove that the U.S. employment is temporary (such as an employment agreement clearly stating employment duration or details about the assignment clearly showing it is not permanent)

Note that providing irrelevant documents may work against you. Instead, go with only documents that support eligibility for the TN position.

What the Consular Officer Evaluates

The visa interview is used to determine whether an applicant qualifies for the selected TN profession and has a genuine temporary job offer.

The Position and USMCA Profession

The officer will verify whether the prospective job falls within one of the eligible TN professions in the USMCA Job List. They do not rely on job titles alone. Instead, the officer will also review the job duties described in the employer support letter to determine whether they align with the expected job duties of professionals in the selected TN profession.

Education and Professional Qualifications

The officer will also verify whether the applicant meets the educational and professional requirements for the selected TN profession. When applying, ensure you understand how your degree, license, and experience meet the requirements of the selected TN profession.

A degree alone will not suffice if a TN profession requires a degree and a license. Also, several years of experience will not suffice if the TN profession requires a degree. Experience can only be used in lieu of a degree only when the relevant TN category specifically permits it.

The U.S. Employer and Job Offer

The consular officer will also review the applicant’s prospective U.S. job offer to ensure it is TN-eligible (a legitimate employment from a U.S. employer). The type of details they may review includes:

  • The employer
  • Work location
  • Salary
  • Projects
  • Employment period

Temporary Intent

TN is a temporary non-immigrant classification. The consular officer will need to be convinced that the applicant’s prospective U.S. employment is temporary. When attending consular interviews, be prepared to discuss the purpose and duration of your U.S. employment honestly and consistently.

Common TN Visa Interview Questions

There is no fixed list of TN visa interview questions. The interview will depend on an applicant’s profession, qualifications, employer, and immigration history. However, some questions you may expect are:

Questions About the Job and Employer

  • What does your U.S. employer do?
  • Where will you be working?
  • What will your primary job duties be?
  • Who will you report to or work under?
  • What salary or compensation have you been offered?
  • How long is the employment expected to last?
  • How did you obtain this job opportunity?

Questions About the TN Profession

  • Which TN profession are you applying under?
  • Why does your position qualify under that TN profession?
  • How do your job duties align with the selected TN profession?
  • Why does this position require your professional background?
  • Your employer uses the title [corporate job title]. How does it relate to the TN profession you selected?

Questions About Education and Experience

  • What educational degree do you hold, and what was your field of study?
  • Which university did you attend, and when did you graduate?
  • Do you have any certifications or professional licenses relevant to this profession?
  • What previous work experience prepared you for this position?
  • How does your education and experience relate to the offered job?

Questions About the Temporary Stay

  • How long do you expect to work in the United States?
  • Have you previously visited or worked in the United States?
  • What are your plans after your TN employment ends?
  • Have you previously applied for a U.S. visa or immigration benefit?

How to Prepare for the Mexico TN Visa Interview

Here is a checklist to help you prepare for the Mexico TN visa interview:

  • Review the submitted DS-160 and make sure you are familiar with all the information it contains.
  • Read the TN employer support letter carefully. Ensure you are familiar with its content (such as the job title, job duties, and the selected TN profession). And be ready to discuss the TN eligibility justification.
  • Understand the selected TN profession. Understand how your job title and job duties qualify for the TN profession you selected.
  • Practice describing the job duties in simple language.
  • Review degrees, transcripts, licenses, and evaluations. Ensure you have evidence of your qualifications. Be ready to explain how your education and professional experience qualify you for the TN position.
  • Check that titles, dates, salary, work location, and employer details are consistent.
  • Organize documents in a logical order so that you can easily locate and retrieve any that is requested.
  • Confirm the appointment time, location, and current security rules.

Common Mistakes During a TN Visa Interview

The common mistakes that TN applicants make during a TN visa interview include:

  • Inconsistent information across documents. Differences in information in supporting documents may raise questions that require clarification. This can lead to delays or outright refusals.
  • An unclear connection between the position and the TN profession. If there’s no clear connection between the offered position and the TN profession, the consular officer may conclude that the applicant does not qualify for TN classification.
  • Vague or inaccurate descriptions of job duties. If the job description is vague or inaccurate, the officer may fail to see how the job qualifies for the selected TN profession.
  • Missing educational or professional credentials. This may make it difficult to demonstrate that the applicant has the educational or professional qualifications for the TN profession.
  • Using a basic offer letter instead of a detailed TN support letter. A basic offer letter may not provide enough information to show that the offered position and the applicant qualify for the TN profession.
  • Memorized or misleading answers. Offering memorized or misleading answers may undermine an applicant’s credibility. This may result in a refusal.
  • Providing unnecessary information. Volunteering unnecessary information can lead to additional follow-up questions. This may lead to requests for additional evidence and delays.
  • Following outdated appointment or consulate information. Relying on outdated guidance may result in delays and appointment issues (such as going to the wrong location or bringing a prohibited item).

What Happens After the Interview?

The possible outcomes of the visa interview are visa approval, administrative processing, or visa refusal.

Flowchart of TN visa interview outcomes in Mexico: approval, 221(g) processing, or refusal, then CBP admission and I-94

Visa Approval

If the officer determines that the applicant meets the requirements for a TN visa and that no further review is needed, the visa may be approved. The applicant’s passport will be collected for the visa to be printed and attached.

The time required to return the passport (and the attached visa) varies from consulate to consulate. It may be wise not to make irreversible travel arrangements until the visa has been issued.

Additional Documents or Administrative Processing

The consulate may determine that an application requires further review before a decision can be made. The applicant may receive a Section 221(g) notice, which is a temporary visa refusal. It means that the officer cannot issue the visa at that time because additional processing, review, or information is required.

Follow the written instructions on the notice (which may be a request for additional documents). The application may later be reconsidered after additional documents are provided or administrative processing is completed.

Visa Refusal

If the officer determines that an applicant has not established eligibility for the TN visa, the application may be refused. A refusal may relate to the TN profession, qualifications, employer documentation, temporary intent, or another eligibility issue.

Entry to the United States

Visa approval allows an applicant to travel to a U.S. port of entry and request admission. However, even with an approved visa stamp in the passport, CBP makes the final admission decision and issues the I-94 record.
