If you believe you meet the above-mentioned qualifications, you may be a rightful candidate to apply citizenship by naturalization. The procedure is outlined in this article for your guidance:
Step 1: Complete Your Citizenship Application
- File Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization).
- Presentation of the following supporting documents:
- Form N-648, the form used in seeking a disability waiver for the English proficiency test and Civics test.
- Form N470, the form used by a qualified applicant to preserve the continuity of your residency requirement when you are outside the country for an extended period.
- A copy of your Alien Registration Card better known as "Green Card"
- Valid passport
- Recent photographs in specified format (size and background)
- Filing fee and other fees for biometric scanning
- Other documents as may be required
- Application must be filed in the appropriate USCIS service center
- Biometric scanning or fingerprinting
- Background investigation to be conducted by the FBI.
- Scheduled interview before the USCIS officer which include the administration of the following examinations:
- English proficiency test
- US Civics test
- The administration of an Oath of Allegiance
Step 2: Your Citizenship Interview
You will receive an appointment for your U.S. Citizenship interview. Be prepared to wait for a long time at the USCIS Officer, but make sure you arrive earlier for your interview date
This is what worries many people. The Immigration Officer will review your N-400 and the rest of your application. If there are any changes to your Application, be prepared to provide the correct information.
You will then be tested on your English ability. This includes a speaking test, reading test and writing test. Remember to use the study materials provided by USCIS on their website. You will then be tested on your knowledge of U.S. Civics. If you answer 6 out of 10 questions, you passed. There are 100 possible questions that can be asked, study them.
You have two chances to take the English and Civics test per application. If you fail you will be retested within 90 days.
Step 3: Oath of Allegiance
This is the final step in the Naturalization proceedings. The examining USCIS officer evaluates your application and determines your qualifications. If you fully satisfy the naturalization requirements, you will be directed to take an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. constitution.
Finally, a Certificate of Naturalization will be issued.
