The U.S. CBP (Customs and Border Protection) is the national agency responsible for regulating international travel and trade and enforcing immigration laws at U.S. borders and ports of entry. The CBP is all about protecting the American people by safeguarding the borders.
CBP officers are the final authority on admitting TN visa applicants into the United States at land borders or airports. When TN applicants are entering the U.S., the CBP:
- Reviews TN application documents
- Conduct background checks
- Interview the applicant to verify intent and eligibility
- Issue Form I-94 (if adjudication is positive).
Thus, while the USCIS processes immigration benefits in the U.S., the CBP’s immigration involvement is granting or denying admission at entry. Even returning TN visa holders must pass CBP inspection every time they re-enter the U.S.
